Organization founded to encourage Jews to follow more strict interpretations of Hasidism; name based on an acronym from three Hebrew characters from words for Chochma (Wisdom), Bina (Understanding), and Daas (Knowledge). This essay discusses general history of Jews in Charleston and elsewhere in the Carolinas during the Colonial and antebellum eras, and examines impact and reaction to arrival of "Lubavitchers" to the Jewish communities in Charlotte, N.C., in 1980 and to Myrtle Beach and Columbia, S.C., in 1987.
